(阅读理解)31: Sitting on exercise balls brings more than a smile to students and teachers. Some fourth-graders at Conrad Weiser West Elementary School in Womelsdorf love their new chairs-—probably because they're not really chairs at all.The kids are sitting on the air-filled balls. But different from those just for exercise, these have small legs that keep them from rolling. Sitting on a chair all day in school can make anyone want to move around. So, more and more teachers are letting students have a ball. By using exercise balls instead of common chairs, teachers find students' posture(姿势) and attention improved.Dotti Pownall, a fifth-grader teacher in West Virginia, has been using balls as chairs since December 2008. "The students love them." she says. Pownall took a survey of her students. She found that 80 percent, thought sitting on the balls helped them concentrate(专注) better:"Besides, they’re fun," says Pownall.According to WittFitt, a company that has sold balls to more than 200 schools, they can improve kids' posture and classroom behavior.Exercise ball chairs are getting popular in classrooms, from preschool to college. Some adults  even use them at work.       Lisa Witt felt so strongly about the use of balls as chairs that she started WittFitt. She said the company not only encourages the use of balls but also educates teachers and students on how to use them. "We sell balls in 24 states in America, three provinces in Canada and Japan." says Witt.

(阅读理解)32:     Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.    Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame .    A hero has powers larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.    A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.    There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.

(阅读理解)33:      One midnight, a little girl woke up to pass water. She by herself got up and down her bed, walked to the bedroom door and opened it. She looked outside and walked back, for it was so dark in the hall that she feared.     Her mother said, “Don’t be afraid, honey. Take courage!”     “What’s courage?” she asked, running to her mother’s bed.    “Courage is the brave breath,” her mother answered.    “Mum, do you have courage?”    “Certainly.”    The girl held out her little hands, saying, “Mum, blow some of your breath of courage to me.”    After her mother blew out two mouthfuls of breath into her little cold hands, the little girl clenched her fists nervously, afraid that the “breath of courage” would run away. Then with her fists clenched, she walked out of the bedroom towards the bathroom with nothing to fear.     Her mother said to herself, “It will be nice if someone can blow some kind of ‘breath’ to me. Then I can hold it in my hands too when I feel terrified or lost.”     In fact, mostly, what we are terrified of is nothing but the fear in our mind. Who we should defeat is nobody but ourselves.

(阅读理解)34:     There has been a lot of rain in California recently. Villagers and leaders there begin to be worried because they have found two birds died from a disease, West Nile Virus(病毒).    West Nile Virus is carried by mosquitoes(蚊子).The symptoms(症状) are just like the flu. However, it can cause dangerous brain problems. When it rains a lot, it will leave a lot of water in ponds and trees. These places are good for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in the water. Warm weather will help the mosquito eggs to develop and then the number is increasing. Birds eat the mosquitoes and get sick. People can get the disease if they are bitten by mosquitoes with West Nile Virus.    The government is trying its best to stop the spread of West Nile Virus. People are asked to wear long sleeves(长袖)and pants, close their windows and shut the doors. At the same time, workers have been sent out to check the wet areas. If they find mosquitoes they will use some special medicine to kill them.
